He had been with you for 5-6 months prior to my adoption, and clearly he is happy to have found a home. My girlfriend and I have provided quite the lifestyle for him, and he has brought us hours of joy and entertainment. He has used his litter box since day one with no "accidents." What really impresses me is that without instruction, he knows that he should scratch only his scratching posts on his carpeted tower that I built for him. This is especially comforting with microsuede furniture in the house!  He loves his laser toy and will even play fetch (better than most dogs!) with his blue mouse. I have been around cats my entire life, and he is by FAR the best one yet.
I've attached a few pictures – thanks again for all that you do!
All the best,

Matt

Bella heads for Tennessee

This is a thank you note to all the people that work at the Northwoods Humane Society. She is a wonderful cat although a bit aloof at times. Does not seem to like to be held very much but we attribute that to her being in a multi-pet household. My new family really loves me and gives me kisses all the time even though I try to wiggle away and get back to playing! I have two boys to play with and who help fill my dishes with water and food each morning. I especially like Micah, he's 8, he lets me sit in his lap for a long time, I think he's my favorite human. ;-) I have a lot of energy, they call me Silly Willy. I'm a good boy and hardly scratch on furniture, just on my scratching pole!
I love exploring, hiding my catnip "mousies" in my families shoes, and hanging out with everyone. My mom & dad like when I climb up on their bed at night and lay down by their heads.
I went to the vet last week and had two shots, but now they said I don't have to go back for a whole year. My new permanent home is great and filled with love!
Thanks for taking care of me until Juan, Tammy, Micah, and Gabriel found me,
Willy

Prevent outdoor shocks

Greetings! Please see the international dog shock incidents on
StreetZaps; please disseminate this vital public service to preclude
more injuries or tragedies. Many thanks for all your commendable work
and stay safe!
Best,
Blair
Just so you know, I confer with Con Edison's Stray Voltage and Public
Affairs Units and contribute to Wet Nose Guide, Petfinder, and New
York Dog Chat.
HOW TO SLAY AN INVISIBLE DANGER.
Blair Sorrel, Founder
http://www.StreetZaps.com
212-877-2104
Contact voltage is a chronic hidden hazard that can readily victimize
an unsuspecting dog, walker, or both. No dog lover could possibly
observe a more horrifying scene than witnessing his beloved pet
instantaneously maimed or tragically electrocuted. When you exercise
your pooch, please exercise greater prudence. Common outdoor
electrical and metal fixtures may shock or even kill your vulnerable
dog. And depending upon the current, the walker will be bitten and
like poor Aric Roman, suffer permanently. But you can, indeed,
self-protect.
Just start to adopt this simple strategy — EYEBALL THE BLOCK, AND
AVOID A SHOCK. Take a few seconds and make your trajectory toward
generally safer, free standing, non-conductive surfaces, ie.,
plastic, wood, cardboard. Intuit your dog's cues and if it's
resistant, change directions. Work site perimeters may be live so try
to elude them. If necessary, switch sides of the street or your hands
when leading to skirt hazards. If you traverse the same route, you may
memorize locations of potential dangers. Carry your pooch when in
doubt. Consider indoor restroom products like PottyPark when external
conditions are chancy or RopeNGo's hardware-free leash and harness.
And don't rely on dog booties as a palliative as they will actually
put your pet at even greater risk since the dog can't tell you they're
leaking! We came looking for a tiny kitten but my 6 year old wanted to look at Lily's sister. When the foster mom's notes about Lily's sister said she wouldn't do good with small kids, we decided to look at Lily instead. It was love at first site. She's a little older than we planned but it is just a perfect match. She loves EVERYONE - even my 6 year old picking her up all the time doesn't phase her. She is a bit of a diva - my king size bed is barely room enough for Lily and myself, she's such a bed hog! She is the sweetest kitty. I have never ever had a kitty who purrs as much or as loud as she does. She is very well trained with her litter box and so well adusted to being around people. I am so thankful to her foster mommy for making such a loving enviroment for her - it is obvious in Lily's personality and demeanor that she was loved very much before we found her.
My older son is getting ready to go to college in a few weeks. Having Lily will make the transition easier for my 6 year old who will be missing his big brother. And I'm sure she'll help mom with the transition too!
Thank you, Northwoods Humane Society, for taking sure good care of this baby girl until we found her. Or rather, until she found us!

Berniece

Hi,
We adopted Berniece about a week and and a half ago. She had came in with her mother and brothers and had been in a foster home. She is a great kitten! The foster home did a really good job with her! We changed her name to Wowzy Whiskers. She was very social right away with all of us and loves to play. She is so affectionate and loves to be petted and purrs and purrs. She wasn't sure about the dogs right away. She now has a Golden Retiver mix brother and a Lab mix sister, who have been around a cat their whole life. They got batted and hissed at for a while, but now Wowzy Whiskers curls up with the Lab on the couch and they are really starting to play. I am home all day and have a 4 year old little girl who loves cats, so Wowzy Whiskers gets lots of attention, play time and love.
I really do appreciate how well the foster home did, it was obvious due to how affectionate and how easily she adapted to our house!
Thanks so much for our new kitten, that has now found her forever home!
Nancy and Ashley Fisher

James

Hello, about a week ago I adopted James, a big fat fluffy black cat. Right when I walked into the room I knew he belonged to me. I was worried he wouldn't get a long with our chihuahua and our two other cats but I had nothing to worry about. It was tense the first few days, but since hes acclimated he has been wonderful. He loves rolled up balls of tin foil, cat nip, and toys he can carry around. He likes to leave toys in our shoes and when he gets hyper there is 14 lbs of fur flying through the house. His favorite hiding spot is in a kennel we have set up but for the most part he just sprawls out on the floor. He has been such a blessing. Thank you so much.

Bella (Kamyla)

Thanks Northwoods team for helping find Bella (Kamyla) a new home with us, she is a wonderful blessing to help us go on with our lives after our loses. A loving family brought me home at the end of March and what fun we have been having.
They have about 60 acres of woods and swamp right behind the house that is mine to run and play in. I really enjoy the swamp and ponds...I am a lab and retriever mix who loves the water. My new family consists of Mom (she feeds me) and Dad (he likes to play some with me) and Son (he loves to take me for walks and wrestle) and Daughter (she loves to play and snuggle me and walk me). The other animals are a stuck up cat, the neighbor dog (the neighbors are Grandparents to me), and several rats that don't do much. They also have these fun things that fly in the yard that the people call chickens and ducks (they are fun to chase, but get me in trouble).
My family loves to take me with them everywhere and at night I sleep by Mom's bed (she is the one to let me out at night when nature calls). I get upset when the kids forget to take me with them outside, but that is usually remedied with a quick and loud bark. I am really enjoying my new family and know they really love me. Just a short week ago I had a bad sore break open on my cheek. Mom took me to the vet right away and found out it was an abscess on my tooth. I am taking medicine and it is healing nicely. If you want to see a picture of me before my family has time to get some submitted I am the face on the blog above the donate button for donations to homeless animals. Thanks for letting me share my wonderful story.

My New Family

I was adopted by a little girl who LOVES animals! She brought me to my new home about 2 weeks ago. There are 4 people in the family and also a pet dog named Binky. He's very afraid of me :) He doesn't like my claws! I like to chase him around the house when I'm in my playful mood...he runs and tries to hide but he's too big. My owners bought me several stuffed mice toys but I think my favorite toy is a ponytail binder. I like to grab it and toss it around. I go in the bathroom and take them off the counter. I probably have one in every room.
I'm very happy with this new family. I love to cuddle up with the kids at bedtime and sleep in their rooms. They all rub my belly and it makes me purr.
I'm glad they chose me because now I have a family to call my own! They love me and always want to play, they help fill my food and water dishes. They also got me great new mouse toys that we use everyday.
I have some problems with my eyes, but I already got medicine and get a treat when I'm done taking it.
I purr all the time and cuddle with everyone who comes over. They tell me that I have a very sweet personality and am a cuddle bug. My favorite spot to sleep is on one of the couches with my new blanket. I like my new home a lot! :-)
Love, Angel

Buster

It was fate that we got Buster. We had been considering a third dog for awhile, and knew we wanted another black lab male. My son and husband had already picked out a name for our new dog, which happened to be Buster, (after Mythbusters, my son's favorite TV show). I also volunteered at NHS as a dog walker last year, so how perfect that we rescued him from there. (All three of our dogs are rescues.) We took him home for a "trial" and the moment he met our other two, I knew he was ours forever. Everyone got along great. Buster made himself at home right away. He acts as if he's lived in our house his whole life! Thank you NHS for such an awesome pet. Buster is the sweetest, mellowest man and I can't imagine our home without him.

Charlie Chaplin

Hi,
My name is Charlie Chaplin and I am a very loveable cat. I thought t would be nice if I told the story of the family I adopted.. When I moved into my new castle, it took me a couple days to get used to all the different sounds but now I'm pretty used to everything. I even allow my two housemates to sit in the chairs I've taken over (if I get to the chair first, they can sit in another or on the floor). They bought me a really nice squeeky toy mouse that I quickly lost. So they bought
me another and now I have two of them that I bat all over the house. My new people seem to
really love me....I think they were going to change my name but decided "Charlie Chaplin" suited me very well. I have total control over my adoption situation and have the run of the castle.
Shortly after I arrived here, I was taken to visit a very nice vet for my wellness check. I think they took me a few days sooner than they were going to because I had a urinary trac infection.
For two weeks, they hid my medicine in some wonderful food they took from a can. I knew the
medicine was there but ate the food anyway to get better and make my housemates happy. I now follow them wherever they go. They scratch my chin, rub my tummy and brush my fur soI know they love me cuz I'm so happy and loveable. I think I have complete control over them.
I was treated very well while I was at Northwoods and really appreciate all they did for me. Since they took such good care of me, I was able to adopt my new family and I love them so much.
Charlie
PS: That's me sittling on one of my thrones; I have at least one in each room.

Happy Tail

Mia found some people

After spending four months at the Northwoods Humane Society, I finally found some people to adopt. My first few hours in my house were a little troubling, they already had another dog. Her name is Bixby, she's a 12 year old dog who is blind and doesn't want to play. Well, I hope we can work out our differences. My people set up this neat aerial dog run cable for me, but they'll have to fix it. I guess I don't know my own strength and I tore it up pretty good. But they have this awesome electronic doggy door. I get a special doodad for my collar and I can go in and out whenever I want and I get this HUGE kennel area to run around in AND THEY LIVE ON A LAKE!!! I hope that all of my animal friends at Northwoods get the chance to adopt some people like mine and I want to thank everybody at Northwoods for taking such good care of me and helping me to find my people, and a special thank you to Heather O'Meara for getting us together in the first place.

Charlie

Hi, I was adopted a week ago on Jan.15. We have renamed her Minnie (Mouse). She is doing wonderfully & the transition was, surprisingly, a breeze. There hasn't been one issue. It's like she's been our dog for the last for years. She has a stuffed bear which she loves to play fetch with & lays on pillow on the desk when one of us is on the computer. She gets along sometimes) with the cats, but I blame our black cat Earnhardt, who we also adopted from Northwoods 3-1/2yrs ago (FKA Isaac, animal #870169). Earnhardt is an instigator, but Minnie holds her ground will chase back. Oh & sometimes she is spoiled and is my snuggle bug all night in bed. Thank you Northwoods for the new addition!

Brasco

We adopted Brasco FKA Shorty in October, he has been such a lovable dog. The jury is still out as to his mix breed and the vet is really excited to see what he will grow up to be. His coloring and size is so unique. We take him and his new companion Deedee to Chuck & Don's on a regular basis and even though Deedee use to be the center of attention she is happy to share the spot light with Brasco. I call him my lover dog because every night after a hard day at work he makes a point of snuggling with me in my chair. There is no better therapy than that, he is such a joy and good fit for our family. Even Deedee can't resist his charm and she tends to be a Diva at times, he is such a good guy to have around when you have a Diva in the house. He is so easy going and loves everyone equally, even though my husband said he's my dog all the way, I can accept that. We have a nice fenced in back yard that he was quick to point out the escape hatch too. That has since been fixed
, and it's good we have dog friendly neighbors and they promptly returned him. He has his moments like all puppies do, but he is almost potty trained and loves to prance around on our walks. We have plans to enroll him at Katies Canine for some training classes; Deedee has been doing well with him but we figure she could use some help and she would probably like a refresher. After all a Divas schedule can be so hectic. I can't thank you enough for allowing us to adopt Brasco, keep up the good work of matching pets with the right families.
Take Care,
Mary
File #0 Brasco.jpg exceeds the maximum file size. He is so playful but he loves to sit in your lap and cuddle up with you- thats why I named him Snuggles. He gets along with the 2 dogs and is always trying to wrestle with them! He loves playing with shoe strings and when you're in the kitchen he decides that he is going to lay right on your feet! Oh and I can't forget how much he loves his cat naps. He is also excellent around little kids- he loves the attention and they love giving it to him. I am so happy that he is happy with his forever home. Thank you so much for letting me adopt such a wonderful kitty.

Kassandra

I saw a video of Kassandra on a monday and just fell in love with her. When I called Northwoods I was told that someone had just called and put her on hold and were coming to pick her up. I was heartbroken. 1 month prior I had put my 14 year old cat to sleep. My cat was extremely affectionate and sweet, and I could tell from the video that Kassandra had the same personality. On wednsday of that week I took my 3 year old son to Northwoods to "look" at the cats. When we walked into the cat room there was Kassandra. The person that had adopted her had to bring her back due to an allergy. I feel like we were meant to bring her home. We brought her home on Friday and have loved every minute we spend with her. She is the sweetest little girl and sleeps every night curled up on our bed. Thank you Northwoods for all of the hard work you do. Kassandra is now named Sally after the car in the movie Cars.

Tibby (Kasmira)

It's such fun to read through the stories of joy brought by these wonderful furry friends. My Granddaughter and i adopted our precious little kitty a little over a month ago ~ and share so many of the feelings and experiences they've written about. Like many of you, we changed her name to reflect her incredible playfulness and curiousity. Her Big Brother, Bob (a 16 yr. old male) accepted her very quickly ~ and is finding his 'inner kitten' more each day as Tibby relentlessly urges him into her contagious enthusiasm. She's collected lots of toys from the parade of human visitors who come to meet her (and keeps us all in stitches playing with every one), but her favorite plaything is Bob's swinging tail.
Whether chasing after anything that moves, leaping into her cloth 'Kitty Cube", playing Peek-a-boo with us, or snuggling into a convenient lap for a nap ~ Tibby has truly blessed our home with laughter, love and wonder. i can't imagine life without her in it.
We can't thank our great friends at Northwood enough for all they do. Without their compassion, love and committment to all these wonderful animals, our darling Tibby would have been just another kitty left by the roadside, instead of the awesome gift she is to us. Izzy has been the delight of our household! We just love her. She is quiet and sweet. She has the most beautiful golden eyes!
When we first brought Izzy home she was very shy and would run and hide when ever anyone came close. This lasted only a couple of days. She now owns the house.
I really liked it when she would follow me into the kitchen and beg for a treat. She would show me her empty bowl and ask for a treat no matter what time of day it was. I would always give her a treat... what could it hurt, right? After a few days of this the whole family was gathered and I began to tell them how she follows me into the kitchen for a snack. Low and behold I found out that she was doing that to every member of our family and getting 6-8 snacks daily! Wow! Izzy had been very busy working our whole family! It made us all laugh. We now know that she gets her normal meals and only one snack in the evening. We take turns giving her the snack as she loves them the most.
We love our new kitty! Thanks so much for letting us adopt her.

Jimmy Mack

We adopted Jimmy Mack, one week ago. Just prior to the adoption, we put our Bichon "BJ" down due to an illness. We were devestaded. The next we went to the shelter in Forest Lake, and we spotted Jimmy Mack. Looking at him was like looking at BJ. It was rather unsettling to see him in the kennel. We immediately took Jimmy for a walk. We got outside and Jimmy was so happy. We knew immediately he was going home with us. We spoke to a woman looking to adopt another dog and she said she would have adopted Jimmy, but the foster parent report said Jimmy was not good with other dogs, so she passed on Jimmy. We are sooooooo thrilled that she did. Jimmy has played with all the dogs in our neighborhood. He has adjusted extremely well. He changed our lives completely from sad to very happy. We took Jimmy Mack to the vet in Pine City, for his free examination, and he got a clean bill of health. Thank God and thanks Northwoods. When I arrived I met other cats already living here and was so excited to have friends to play with. My new house is big and now that I have figured out the stairs I run all over the place. There are so many toys here I hardly have time to play with them all. There are two people in my new house and they both love me a lot and let me sleep in their beds, which is really nice. My favorite friend here is my brother Axel. He is a couple of years older than me but likes to play just as much as I do. We chase each other all over the house and it's a lot of fun.
My new parents said that I did a really amazing job getting comfortable in my new home. On my first day I was ready to meet the other cats and I adjusted to my new litter boxes and food right away. The lady that brought me home told me that she is really proud of me for using the scratching posts and not clawing up the furniture either. I visited my new vet Dr. Randall during my first week here and he said that I'm in tip-top shape and a very healthy, good looking cat. He also said that I'm a bit of a ham because I love everybody and ask them to pet me. Thank you for taking such good care of me while I waited 3 months to find my forever home!
We have changed my name to Luke because when my true personality came out it was determined that I needed something a little bit less regal-sounding. I'm a little crazy and a bit of a thrill seeker (I don't always use the stairs to get down to the basement - why should I when there is a perfectly good recliner that I can leap to?) so we tried a few names on for size and I like Luke the best. It makes me sound tough!
I just wanted to let you all know that everything is awesome and I'm so happy in my new home. I could not have asked for a better experience. I came to NHS looking for a cat that would be a good companion for my 9 month-old calico, Zoe. I had a small list of qualities I was looking for and had no trouble falling in love with several cats. I spent time with five or six different cats. Mya stoled my heart the second she was brought into the room.
The day after adopting Mya I took her to our vet for her check-up. The first question the vet had for me was "How did you choose?" I told her that she would know how as soon as Mya came out of the cat-carrier. The vet set Mya on the floor to see her walk. Mya was very scared so the vet kneeled down next to her. Mya turned around and immeditaly climbed up into the vet's lap. It was love at first sight for the vet also, she then knew the answer to her question.
Mya was very scared and depressed, she had been at NHS for over 4 months and really needed a good home. I knew she was the perfect fit, my other cat had different ideas about the the "fit." Zoe was not happy with her new "kitty-sister" and she was not happy with me, but I was determined to give it time and make it work. I kept them seperated with a baby-gate and allowed them to slowly get to know eachother. They made it clear when they were ready to meet. It took Mya and Zoe about 2 weeks to become best friends.
I thank Mya everday for not giving up and for waiting at NHS for me to find her.
File #2 DSC00560.JPG exceeds the maximum file size. So as a gift to adoptive-daddy Shawn, her adoptive-mommy Q set out to look for the perfect gift, which brought her to NHS. When Q got to the shelter, she spent a good hour reading over the paperwork for all of the cats, since Shawn's pet criteria was pretty specific. During this time, Trixie was watching from her cube in silence, and since there was no paperwork clipped to the door, Q was under the impression that Trixie was already adopted or just unavailable for some reason, so Q repeatedly tried to put her out of mind. After deciding on a few "maybe" cats, Q tried to leave NHS for the day, but glanced back once more at Trixie. Then she felt the need to ask about the lack of paperwork, and when it was discovered that her papers were in the medical room from a visit earlier in the day, Q was happy to find that Trixie was indeed available. So they went to a bonding room to spend some time together, a
nd Q knew right away that Trixie was the one for them. She then reviewed the paperwork and found that Trixie met all of the criteria for being Shawn's new cat (such as being able to tolerate dogs). Q brought Shawn in to meet Trixie the next day, and they adopted her at the end of the visit, taking her home after a few days of preparation for the new addition. When they returned to bring Trixie to her new home, having stayed at NHS for several months until then, Trixie JUMPED into Q's arms and didn't complain at all during the car ride home.
Trixie took to her new home immediately, and didn't hesitate to assert her superiority over the dog. She is content to be an indoor cat, and is very friendly with everyone she meets. Trixie is also quite the playful cat, but well-behaved and affectionate when her parents can't resist her cuteness. People always say "Wow, Q picked out such a great cat", but Q insists that it was the other way around.
Trixie's favorite things include: teasing the dog, playing with her felt fishing wand toy and catnip squirrel, playing peek-a-boo on the stairs, watching the birds from the window, sleeping on Shawn's office chair or on Q's back when she naps, purring really loud, trying to ambush Shawn after he gets out of the shower, being smushed between her parents for some cuddles, and cuddling with the dog by the fireplace when she thinks no one is watching.
Some sad news for Shawn and Q came after the new year started. After Trixie struggled with chronic upper respiratory problems, her vet tested her for FeLV and FIV, the latter of which came back positive (her doctor said that she must've gotten it too soon before adoption for it to have shown up when we got her). Between the blood draw for that and the pokes for her routine vaccinations, she spend a few days under the weather and a bit less social, but is bouncing back. She will have to be kept on antivirals and her parents have to be extra diligent about her health and vet visits, and this sadly means that she will have to remain an only cat. But her parents are very glad to have Trixie and she is more than worth the extra care and the minor added expenses in keeping her FIV managed.
Trixie has brought her new parents lots of happiness and love, and they are excited to have been picked out by such a wonderful cat, and to be able to give her a loving home after so much time without one.

More 2010 success stories!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; And in both cases, they ring true. For the animals at Northwoods Humane Society, living outside a stainless steel or wire kennel is what they truly want. They want people to snuggle and play with, beds to curl up on and love. They want a forever home. Right now it is a home for the holidays, but every day Northwoods has animals waiting to go home.

Now some people say you shouldn't consider adding a pet to your family during the holiday season. With parties, visitors, decorations and such, it's just too hectic for a new addition. And, in some cases, that is true. But if you have been considering an addition to your family, why not now? Why not give yourself what you truly want? My family and I just completed the adoption of the kitten pictured above. Yes, she is getting into and under the Christmas tree, but we made accomodations for her curiousity. It's great fun to watch her smack at a bulb or curl up among the plethora of stuffed Christmas animals we have at our home. And we know that because we had the room in our home and hearts for one more, we created a space at Northwoods for one more. One more animal that can get out of the cold and the snow. One more dog or cat that will soon be hoping for a home of their own.

Northwoods has two opportunities to help make the consideration of adopting this holiday season even more intriguing for you.

The first is the Twelve Days of Christmas Sale where you can "unwrap" your savings towards a pet adoption from December 12-24. Plus each adoption comes with a gift package for the new family member

The second is Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays. An opportunity to give the animals still in the shelter a break from their kennels from December 23-26.

Please check out http://www.northwoodshs.org/ and click on events or call the shelter at 651-982-0240 for more information.

Thank you

With no snow and few winter jacket weather days, it's hard to believe it's Thanksgiving. However, it is here, and with Thanksgiving comes the giving of thanks. Giving thanks started this week with Give to the Max Day when 19 people donated $3950 to the animals of NHS in just 24 hours. Thank you to you all. However, every day, the animals and staff at NHS have reason to give thanks.

Thank you to the volunteers who come in rain, snow, sun and mosquito weather to walk the dogs, clean the kennels and cuddle the cats. To the volunteers who answer the phone and help the customers, and to the volunteers who raise funds, work events, foster animals, serve on the board, write thank yous and so much more.

Thank you to the people who donate their hard earned money to help the animals, who bring in grocery receipts and bags of cat food or bottles of bleach. To the people who have recently lost a family friend and yet think about the other animals they can help by donating items their family member will no longer need.

Thank you to the girl scout troops, elementary schools and other groups who make items for the animals to improve their stay at NHS or ask others to donate items from our wish list.

Thank you to the kids who choose to have their friends bring food and other items for the animals for birthday gifts instead of presents for themselves. Your thoughtfulness and giving is the true meaning of this time of year.

Thank you to the people who choose to adopt and rescue an animal(s) in need. Thank you to the people who pick up the dog running along Highway 8 or the box of kittens alongside the road.

Thank you to the people who refer others to NHS when they are looking for a pet.

Thank you to the vets who reduce their fees and the schools who provide surgeries and vaccines for the animals.

Thank you to the staff who tirelessly devote themselves each day doing what they can for the animals in their care.

Thank you to the newspapers and WCCO who support NHS with free advertising and PR.

And to every one I mentioned and to you I inadvertently missed, THANK YOU for your support, your time, your empathy. Northwoods is a limited admissions shelter because we don't time animals out based on their length of stay, but the organization does euthanize animals for temperament and medical reasons.

And for the most part, people are satisified with this answer. They understand that we are trying to help as many animals as we can. However, I wonder what Sadie thinks about our policy. Sadie is a beautiful, petite, 3 year old black cat with a pretty patch of white hair on her chest. She is talkative and absolutely adorable when she buries herself under a blanket or newspaper and peaks out at people as they come through cat adoption. Sadie enjoys being petted but is not sure about snuggling or being held and isn't very friendly with other cats. While some consider this a barrier for adoption, I think she's earned her right to be picky about her forever home.

Sadie was 2 years old when she arrived at Northwoods. She celebrated one year of living in a kennel on September 20th, 2009. The staff and volunteers at Northwoods Humane Society have tried everything we can think of to find Sadie a home. We even think she could do okay as an outdoor cat because she does prefer people on her terms. Not that living outdoors is the best solution for a cat, but living a life in a kennel is definitely not the life anyone would hope for a cat.

If you have ever considered rescuing an animal, truly being the hero to an animal who needs it, please come meet Sadie. She deserves to go home.

Deaf Awareness Week

So what does Deaf Awareness Week have to do with Northwoods Humane Society? Well, it gives us the opportunity to highlight Maddy, a deaf Australian Cattle Dog available for adoption at NHS. Maddy is definitely a staff favorite and we would love to find her a forever home soon.

Maddy was found abandoned at Northwoods Humane Society on December 16th, 2008. She is a pretty girl who is almost 2 years old . She has the herding dog personality, and would love to go to a new home and have a job to do.

We would also say that Maddy is completely house-trained. Her name was Goldie. For years, Goldie transported animals for Northwoods Humane Society. She took animals to the University of Minnesota, Minnesota School of Business and Argosy University to be spayed or neutered. She transported animals to the Minnesota State Fair to be spayed. She transported countless animals to the vet and took many cats to PetSmart to be adopted from their "Adopt a Pet" Center. For years, Goldie toiled tirelessly taking animals where they needed to go. She also brought food and litter to the shelter, transported items for fundraisers and took employees to events and classes.

But finally, Goldie got tired and began to struggle on her trips. She just wasn't able to keep up with the demands of transporting so many animals anymore. So sadly, last week we had to say good-bye. Goldie was a great mini-van that served NHS well for many years.

Now NHS staff can be seen driving a newer silver van. This one doesn't have a name yet, but he or she has already started working hard for the animals of NHS. The new van is nice, but today is the day to say good-bye to an old friend. So good-bye Goldie and thanks for all you did for the animals of NHS.

You Can't Have Just One

Northwoods has a sign hanging outside its cat room that says, "Cats are like potato chips, you can't have just one." And here at NHS, we have more than one, 101 to be exact, cats and kittens waiting for their forever homes. Plus there are 27 cats and kittens currently in foster care with more and more calls received each day from people needing to surrender one or more cats.
With no end to the warm weather in sight, the calls will continue. So in order to help find homes for the cats currently in our care and be able to help more cats in need, Northwoods is asking, "Do you have room in your heart and home for one more?" Because now through September 30th, the adoption fee for all cats and kittens is 50% off. No other discounts or promotions apply. Discounted prices range from $29-$75 plus tax.

The First Post

Thank you for checking out the blog for Northwoods Humane Society. Here we hope to keep you updated about the humane society, what is happening at NHS and about some great pets that are available for adoption or, maybe, who have already found their forever homes.

Northwoods Humane Society is a limited admissions shelter. Which means we don't euthanize animals to make room for new animals nor do we take more animals than we have space. So animals at NHS are here until they get adopted which is great. The downside is we do have to turn people away who have animals they need to surrender.

Sometimes animals are available for awhile. We don't always know what causes people to pick one animal over another but there are some obvious reasons. Kittens and puppies are picked before dogs and cats. Small breed dogs go home before the large ones. And black is usually the last color picked. To help those animals who have been with us for longer, we do have a program called "Shelter Stars" which reduces the adoption fee of all animals who have been at NHS for longer than 90 days by 50%.

So if you or someone you know is thinking about adopting, ask about the "Shelter Star" program. We currently have 1 dog, 13 cats and one kitten who have been waiting for too long.
